Right angle prism are commonly used to turn the image path at 90° or to redirect light.
For external reflective applications, the 45° bevel of the prism can be coated with a metallic reflective coating such as gold, silver or aluminium to increase reflectivity and improve image reflection quality, or a dielectric multilayer reflective coating can be applied to the 45° bevel of the prism to provide a 90° turn and 45° penetration of a specific wavelength.
For internal reflection applications, the prism’s incoming and outgoing surfaces can be coated with an AR anti-reflective coating to reduce the reflectance of ultraviolet (UV), visible (VIS) or infra-red (IR) light in the UV-VIS, VIS-NIR, NIR, IR, or specified wavelengths for laser applications.
As long as acceptance angle limitations for TIR from the roof faces are not exceeded, the right angle prisms can serve as a retro reflector, turning beams back to the original direction.
